Changing the world, one film at a time...
Social Action Media IMPACT is our dedicated platform for amplifying the reach of our documentaries, bringing crucial social justice narratives to wider audiences. This site serves as a hub for upcoming screenings, film festivals, events, and television broadcast dates for all of our films, ensuring that each project continues to inspire dialogue, spark action, and create lasting impact. By keeping our audience informed and engaged with the latest opportunities to experience our work, we strive to extend the reach of these powerful stories—each one a tool for change in the fight for racial and social justice. Here, we aim to connect viewers, activists, educators, and change-makers with the films that are shaping the conversation and making a difference in the world.
Founded by Abby Ginzberg, a Peabody Award-winning director and Emmys® Silver Circle inductee, Social Action Media has been producing documentaries about race, social justice, and human rights for over 35 years. Abby’s award-winning body of work includes numerous accolades, such as the NAACP Image Award, Emmy® recognition, and induction into the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. With a long track record of creating compelling, thought-provoking films, Abby and her team are committed to using the power of film to foster social change. We’re continually producing films that explore critical social justice issues and highlight the power of activism, resistance, and resilience. Below are some of our current and upcoming projects:
Waging Change
This documentary follows the struggles of restaurant workers forced to survive on a federal tipped minimum wage of just $2.13 per hour. Waging Change explores the movement for One Fair Wage, featuring activists like Saru Jayaraman, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin, who are fighting for equal pay and economic justice for restaurant workers across the U.S.
Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power
A deeply moving portrait of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, one of the most steadfast voices for peace, human rights, and racial justice in Congress. The film features interviews with key political figures, including Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Alice Walker, and Senator Cory Booker, exploring Lee’s legacy and vision for a more equitable future.
And Then They Came for Us
This award-winning film, narrated by George Takei, connects the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII with the modern-day Muslim travel ban, urging us to reflect on civil liberties in times of national fear and division.
Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa
Narrated by Alfre Woodard, this Peabody Award-winning documentary tells the story of Albie Sachs, a former anti-apartheid activist and judge, and his work shaping South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution.
Agents of Change
This documentary uncovers the untold story of the Black student movement of the 1960s, showcasing the activism that led to the creation of Black and Ethnic Studies programs across U.S. college campuses.
Judging Juries
A short film that highlights the inequities in jury selection and service, calling for reform to ensure diverse and representative juries. It premiered at the Pan African Film Festival and has won several awards.
Labors of Love: Henrietta Szold
Labors of Love: The Life and Legacy of Henrietta Szold a much-needed film with a broad audience. The film will present a rich tapestry, interweaving several threads: of love and heartbreak and the transformation of a repressed Victorian into a political activist; of the vision, factionalism, great achievements and overwhelming contradictions that marked the seminal days of Zionism; and above all, of the triumph and limitations of a woman’s vision in a man’s world. It is a film that will unearth little-known or much-forgotten history; raise questions and stimulate debate around issues of feminism and Jewish identity; and explore the depths of one remarkable woman’s heart and soul.
Liz Carpenter: Shaking It Up
A portrait of Liz Carpenter, the groundbreaking journalist and activist who played a key role in shaping modern women's rights. The film premiered at SXSW and earned accolades including Best Feature Documentary at the Hill Country Film Festival.
A Double Life
This intimate documentary explores the world of activism in the 1960s and the role of lawyers in the prison reform movement, earning the Audience Favorite award at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
She Dared to Dream
We are proud to announce She Dared to Dream, a docu-series that will spotlight the careers of women of color in American politics, featuring trailblazers like Rep. Ayanna Pressley. This series builds on the success of Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power, with Lee serving as a consulting producer.
